I've got an NTSC "Universal" VHS of Io Ho Paura which has artwork from Bloody Payroll on the front cover for some odd reason. I wonder how many other VHS releases there were of it? Still, the sat broadcast version is much more preferable, looking forward to those revised subs DjangoLi.

The reason IO HO PAURA (as well as BANDITI A MILANO & ROMA COME CHICAGO and a few others) are not on DVD is because Paramount owns these, and they don't release these older type of films.
It would be good if Olive or one of the other companies who have been releasing some of Paramount's older stuff got the rights to any of them.

I figured there's no harm trying so I've emailed them about this, Bandits of Milan and The Penthouse. I'll let you know if I hear back from them.
Cool, maybe it would be good to send the same message to Shout Factory and  Legend Films (If Legend indeed are still doing them, seemed to have maybe slowed right down or stopped)  :D

Legend has been out of the Picture for nearly 5 years now. Olive handles all the Paramount older titles. They have turned down more well know titles than these, so sadly, these will likely never get released. There is an Olive Films thread on a newsgroup where their spokesman has said Olive carefully selects which Paramount titles, as they don't want to lose money. Right now, Olive is working on over 100 films from the Republic library which includes mostly classics, but also a few choice horror films such as DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS, TAM LIN and BLIND MAN'S BLUFF (aka CAULDRON OF BLOOD).

I though Legend may have stopped with them but they released some Paramount Blu Rays in 2010.

They had a batch of titles in '08 and did nothing thereafter besides a couple of Blu-ray releases of films they'd previously issued on DVD. My guess is that the 20 or do they released didn't see too well.

I'd LOVE a proper DVD release of this one, but it doesn't seem to be very likely to happen.

There is a german version of the film out there, maybe a tv rip, which is uncut and has quite a good picture quality. Unfortunately the german dub is a pain in the ass. There's also a italien TV rip with english subs and a mediocre picture quality. Dubbing the italien audio to the german video would result in a pretty nice film until something official comes along.

The German VHS has been fandubbed by DarioArgento - and the RAI TV cap is actually far from mediocre - both prints have their advantages: The German VHS has the right colours (strong, vibrant) while the RAI cap is a much more solid image - but the colours do seem very pale if you compare them side by side.

Neither is perfect... but they're both perfectly watchable.

You can grab both over at CG - the subs have been completely re-written and now actually do the film justice - the previous subs (one of my very first efforts...) were riddled with typos, a LOT of missing lines and were generally 'not very good' - Ditch them and get the new copy, if you really want to appreciate what is certainly one of Damiani's finest movies. Given the fact that there's a big Paramount logo at the beginning of the RAI copy there's every chance this film will never get a re-release anytime soon, mostly because Paramount probably aren't that bothered - or - like '4 Flies on Grey Velvet' - it's tied up in some sort of legal limbo.

Note: Due to a glitch that was fixed at the last minute (a repeated 20 second clip) the subs for the German VHS version are 2 seconds out of sync - I'm going to message LordRetsudo to see if he can create a patch (fingers crossed) - I will also fix the four obvious typos I missed that occur in the second half of the film. Dario spent a heck of a long on this one... it was an easy mistake to make... - That aside, he did an amazing job marrying the Italian audio to the German VHS, we both spent far too many hours than any sane person should working on this! - also HUGE thanks to Quidtum for locating it in the first place, without him it would never have happened.

I will try to get a DVDR of the RAI cap (still sourced from VHS) also uploaded so you can all choose for yourselves.

All I can say is that even if you're not a fan of Eurocrime flicks - make the effort to watch it - it's got the scope and style of even the finest Hollywood movies of the era - and then you can throw in a sterling performance from Gian Maria Volonte, arguably one of Italy's finest screen actors. It's unlike any other Eurocrime flick... not that they're bad, quite the opposite, but this one is something special in my books.

My only criticism? The rather wonky train explosion - you'll know what I mean when you see it!

I honestly thought the bit where she's chucked out the window was really well done - some good use of editing to cover up the obvious dummy shot, the arm slowly going down... the kids' frozen reaction - but that train explosion, that was just cheap - but then what were his options? Call in Castallari or Margheriti and use an obvious Fisher-Price  model train?  ::) It was never easy shooting a train explosion in the 70's.... although 'The Cassandra Crossing' did a pretty good job of it in the final reel... okay, okay, technically that wasn't an explosion, more a train falling off a bridge...

oh, er... spoller warning above  :P

Oh yeah, it was well done but it came so suddenly that I burst out laughing.

yeah sorry about the issue with the subs , had a further check, i'd say they need adjusting by just over 1.2 seconds forward. Starting From the 19.00 minute mark, which was where the mistake occurred ,that repeated scene was a schoolboy error, one that you'd expect from rubbish scene groups.
About the german tape, It does have a couple of issues with scene dragging [pause in video while audio continues] thats in the dvdr so it could'nt be fixed. So if anyone has a first gen cap of the actual german vhs , V2 here we come.

I haven't watched my version yet because of the german audio, it's an .avi with a running time of 1:53:08. If you tell me at which point(s) your version drags I can look out for these scenes.
