YOUNG, VIOLENT & DANGEROUS 1976- aka LIBERI, ARMATI E PERICOLOSI

Tomas Milian, Eleonora Giorgi, Stefano Patrizi

Three young men go a crime spree that escalates into an out of control binge of violence that results in a manhunt for the young murderers headed by a determined commissioner (Milian).

Romolo Guerrieri (uncle of Enzo Castellari) directs this Fernando di Leo scripted movie based on a novel by Giorgio Scerbanenco. He also did the spaghetti western 10,000 BLOOD MONEY and a couple of the post nuke movies that were briefly popular in the 80s including THE FINAL EXECUTIONER. I've seen his name on numerous peplums as an AD I think. He also directed JOHNNY YUMA starring Mark Damon in 1966.

Milian is quite different here and extremely "mature" and controlled in his role of the persistent police commissioner out to arrest the junior criminals. Those expecting another madcap, over-the-top performance will either be surprised or disappointed.

A very well made Euro crime thriller that contains some hidden connotations between the relationships of the two principle crooks and Patrizi's girlfriend. There is also much to think about for the younger generation of the time in Milan considering the criminality that was rampant during the 70s all over Italy. Also the issue of the criminals parents is brought to light considering they're all rich and repercussions from years of neglect being responsible for their cruel behavior may seem a bit extreme for such a rampant murder spree
but it does give you something else to think about aside from the near constant diatribes on the legal system of the day.

A very similar movie was released the year prior entitled VIOLENCE FOR KICKS but that film was pure exploitation and had no redeeming values whatsoever. That's not a bad thing mind you, but Sergio Grieco's direction in the other film is no match for Guerrieri's here.

American filmmaker Penelope Spheeris must have seen this movie while making THE BOYS NEXT DOOR (1986) starring Charlie Sheen and Maxwell Caulfield which had a similar plot to this film. Here, it was two hoodlum friends who were social outcasts and a weekend in the city proves deadly when one of them goes further and further over the deep end until the two are surrounded inside a mall after hours.

I haven't watched the doc on this disc from Raro yet, but there seems to be some kind of homo-erotic tendencies between the two main crooks, the mastermind behind the group and the driver whose girlfriend (Giorgi) is constantly at war with him to stand on his own two feet.

There is also a line that reveals that the gang leader is impotent and one scene involves their near discovery by helicopter and the leader grabs the girl and lays her down half naked in a field to try and throw the cops off their trail. This could also be seen another way. That he was trying to prove that he could become excited by the touch of a woman's flesh. I'm sure the doc will speak on this subject. There are several scenes where the leader looks at Patrizi with near lustful eyes that gives the impression the reason for his "impotence", is that he is not turned on at all by women.

A fascinating movie just the same with a great unexpected ending.

Romolo Guerrieri (cousin of Enzo Castellari) directs this Fernando di Leo scripted movie based on a novel by Giorgio Scerbanenco. EXTERMINATORS OF THE YEAR 3000 was directed by Giuliano Carmineo actually, you must be confusing it with THE FINAL EXECUTIONER.  Carmineo's movie wasn't as bad as you say :-\

I've only watched this once, and absolutely hated it (the music, and especially the characters were extremely annoying and unlikeable in a BAD way).  I need to try and re-watch it soon and re-appraise it.

The film the thread is about.  I found absolutely NOTHING appealing about this one at all.
I posted my feelings about it on the DVD Maniacs board a while back, and nobody felt even remotely similar to me.

I thought this was solid entertainment but nothing out of the ordinary.

Didn't you even like Milian in the movie? I generally dislike him bus I thought he was really great as the police inspector in this (an in a few others of course). But I know what you mean about the annoying characters- that Benjamin Lev guy is one of the most annoying actors in cinema history!

I had posted some thoughts on my blog last year: http://trash-online.blogspot.com/2006/10/young-violent-dangerous-1976-romolo.html

Yes, he is annoying but less so in the italian version. Isn't the EXTERMINATORS the one where they refer to people as 'mother grabbers'? FINAL EXECUTIONER has a guy with a samurai sword I believe, yes?

I need to correct something else. Romolo is Castellari's uncle. I was told a while back he was his nephew.

The role Milian plays in this as the police inspector is quite similar to his part as Basevi in Lizzani's Bandits in Milan, wish he'd done more of these serious roles as he wasn't too bad.
Good performance from Stefano Patrizi as the gang leader Paul Farley as well Italian fotoromanzo star Max Delys as Louis, interesting homo-erotic subplot here.

RE: Milian
I'm the exact opposite, I usually love everything he's in, but he got way too little screen time here and his character seemed very basic.  The more I'm remembering the film, the less I ever want to re-watch it again!

On the doc Romolo states that he had a hard time obtaining Milian as he liked doing roles where he was disguised so to speak. Romolo also said there was a reason for this but he would not say. Also, he says other directors told him to not use Milian that he was extremely difficult to work with. Apparently Merli and Merenda did not get on well with Milian at all.

The movie looks far better than the dupe I had previously. Although there is quite a bit of print damage after the 45 minute mark. Someone commented about the characters being unlikeable. I think that was the point. The young man Louis was not really a bad guy as he was torn between his friends and his girlfriend, and at the end he makes "amends". The film is different from most of these films in that it speaks on the youth of the time which considering the pampant violence in schools these days, the film is even more relevant now.

Yeah, same here.  I love him in most of his crime flicks as Gobbo, Monnezza, Nico Giraldi, Julio, and the Chinaman. In this one he's more on the sidelines and as you said he has a pretty basic role.

I like Milian a lot, too. Definitely one of my favourites and to me, adds a little class to much of what he's in.
