Obviously, a remake of this film would have been completely unnecessary but with Schrader writing and a younger Pacino acting, I would have certainly watched it. Also, had this been made, it's a safe bet that there would be a legitimate, English-friendly release of Petri's film on DVD now.
It's too bad that being a great film - or even winning an Oscar for best Foreign film - isn't enough.

...and while I'm on my soapbox. Where's Criterion, or Eclipse coming out with an English language friendly box-set of the oft negelected auteur? Even single releases of his films. Masters of Cinema, BFI, where are you? ...is anyone listening?
At the end when Volontes character is forced to eat salt, does anyone know what this means. I think i heard somewere that eating salt is for when theives are caught but im not sure.
