First Skyfall Trailer Arrives

After a series of false starts and delays, the 23rd official James Bond film went before the cameras earlier this year and is currently in post production – it arrives in UK cinemas on 26th October.

The film, which has been shrouded in secrecy, was written by Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade in collaboration with GLADIATOR scribe John Logan. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY) steps behind the camera to direct his first action picture. Daniel Craig is joined by series stalwart Judi Dench as M and a phenomenal cast that includes Albert Finney, Ralph Finenes, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe.

The above poster was unveiled just last week so it comes as a surprise that the film’s first trailer would arrive less than seven days later, though there was some whispering about it going out with MEN IN BLACK 3.

From looking at the trailer it would seem we’re in for a treat and a fitting tribute to the characters big screen 50th anniversary but it’s going to be a long five months!

Quadrophenia heading to Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion this August

Franc Roddam’s perennial cult classic QUADROPHENIA will be issued on Blu-ray in the US this August by the Criterion Collection. Based on the concept album by the Who, QUADROPHENIA stars Phil Daniels as Jimmy, a disaffected youth who embraces Mod culture in 1960s Britain. The film co-stars Sting, Ray Winstone, Toyah Wilcox and Leslie Ash.

Made in 1979, QUADROPHENIA marked the second of three films commissioned by The Who Films, following the documentary THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT from the same year and prison drama MCVICAR in 1980. Of all the films with which the band was involved (also including Ken Russell’s TOMMY), it’s safe to say that QUADROPHENIA is probably the most popular and is director Roddam’s best-known film (he would go on to make THE BRIDE and K2).

The specs for Criterion’s disc have appeared on Blu-ray.com:

  • New high-definition digital restoration of the uncut version
  • Original 2.0 stereo soundtrack as well as an all-new 5.1 surround mix, supervised by the Who and presented in DTS-HD Master Audio
  • New audio commentary featuring director Franc Roddam and director of photography Brian Tufano
  • New interview with Bill Curbishley, the film’s co-producer and the Who’s co-manager
  • New interview with the Who’s sound engineer, Bob Pridden, discussing the new mix, featuring a restoration demonstration
  • On-set and archival footage
  • Behind-the-scenes photographs

  • A booklet featuring an essay by critic Nick James, a reprinted personal history by original mod Irish Jack, and Pete Townshend’s liner notes from the album

Special Cop in Action – Dorado Films ‘Screeners Project’

The film is finished, the dead weight lies trampled on the editing room floor… all that is left is the Screener. The producers anxiously await the response of the audience. Success or failure relies on the last year and a half of work. Obscurity or success is discovered only in this one moment.

Today, films with character and charm are vanishing. Quirky films are being forgotten. Some films never even had a chance to vanish, they just never arrived. How can we save these precious, ocassionaly unpolished or rough, gems from being ignored?

Welcome to the Dorado Films Screeners project. We have access to hundreds of such films. We do not have the funding to release all of these great films in the pristine, original quality they deserve (if even available). These are our marketting test. These Screeners help us put the funding toward the right films, films that will be appreciated by the largest amount of fans. These Screeners are what we can give back to the fans of these rare films without spending money that will not be recovered. We can experiment, be different, throw these films into the spotlight one more time and see if they can live up to the success the producers, directors, actors, and crew once thought was possible.

What can you do to help?

Watch the films. If you like it keep watching it.

Comment on actors. Comment on the plot. Comment on locations. Comment on film techniques. Comment on what you disliked about the film. COMMENT. Your comments will shape which films we try next. Help us by offering your opinion. You have an opinion. We need to hear it.

Tell others. If you really like a movie, talk about it to your friends. If you think a scene is particularly fantastic, get a link to it (How To) and send it to others. If you love a film, share the love. The more response you get for a film, the more likely you will see something more done with it.

A word about quality

Many of these films are going to be transfered from 1″ broadcast tapes. The quality will not be great, but it was once deemed worthy enough to be shown on television. Other than meeting the format requirement for YouTube, these tapes are shown as is with no altering or primping. This is the quickest, cheapest, simplest way for us to deliver these films to you. We are striving for quantity not quality with these screeners. This is a test after all. Commenting on quality of the transfer is not constructive. To protect our film from piracy, we have added a slight watermark.

BFI – BBC’s Classic Ghost Stories Available Finally on DVD

Posted on the BFI website on April 25th…

The BFI is to make the complete series of the BBC’s classic Ghost Stories finally available on DVD this year.

These much-loved tales terrified BBC TV audiences at Christmas throughout the 1970s. Most of the instalments were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and based on M.R. James’s celebrated supernatural stories.

With only three of the twelve BBC Ghost Stories previously released on DVD (by the BFI in 2002), the films in this brilliant series have been high on many film and TV fans’ ‘most wanted’ DVD lists.

The films are a key influence on recent British ghost and horror films, including The Woman in Black, and have inspired many screenwriters and filmmakers including Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock).

The first two volumes will be released in August 2012 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of M.R. James’s birth. Two more volumes will follow in September, while the fifth and final volume, as well as a complete Ghost Stories for Christmas box set, will follow in October.

Volume One includes two versions of the chilling Whistle And I’ll Come To You: Jonathan Miller’s 1968 adaptation, starring Michael Hordern, and the 2010 re-imagining, starring John Hurt.

Volume Two includes The Stalls of Barchester (1971), starring Robin Hardy, and A Warning to the Curious (1972), starring Peter Vaughan, as well as Christopher Lee’s Ghost Stories for Christmas: The Stalls of Barchester (2000)

More Pasolini coming to UK Blu-ray from Eureka!

Eureka Entertainment has announced four more classic films directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini for release as Blu-ray+DVD combos as part of its Master of Cinema series.

HAWKS AND SPARROWS and PIGSTY are to be released on 23rd July and they are followed by the portmanteau film (co-directed by Pasolini,  Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Luc Godard, and Ugo Gregoretti) Ro.Go.Pa.G. on the 27th August. Finally OEDIPUS REX concludes this set of releases on 24th September. This marks the first time that any of the titles has been released on Blu-ray in the UK.

Eureka will also release the Giorgio Moroder version of Fritz Lang’s classic silent sci-fi film METROPOLIS as a limited edition Steelbook on 23rd July. The Italian-born synth king’s version of the film was constructed in the 1980s and its use of contemporary music (the likes of Queen and Kate Bush) was seen as controversial at the time but has endured to become a cult favourite.
